Chapter Twenty-One

Declan knocked on Charlotte’s door, spotting his laptop sitting on the living room table as he entered. Seamus trailed behind him, splitting off to head toward the bathroom.

“I’m going to hit the jacks,” said his uncle.

Declan’s lip curled. “Seriously? We left the house five minutes ago.”

Seamus shrugged as he entered the bathroom. “Welcome to old age.”

Charlotte’s soft-coated Wheaten skittered past Seamus, gave him a quick sniff and a wiggle, and then bolted forward to say hi to Declan, using his shins to stop her momentum.

“Hey there, Freakshow,” he said, giving the dog ear scratches.

“Good morning,” said Charlotte, following the dog down the hall from her bedroom. “Did I hear Seamus?” She glanced at the closed door of her hallway bathroom.

“Yes. I’m taking ole’ peanut kidneys to see another house this morning before work.”

“Try not to find any dead bodies this time,” she said bouncing to her toes to peck him on the cheek.

“No promises.” He opened his laptop to stare at a black screen.

“It’s dead—was when Gryph dropped it off.”

Declan closed the lid. “Looks like mine. It’s the right model. The cord’s at the store, I’ll make sure there.”

Charlotte leaned against her counter. “I’ve had a busy morning. I’ve already had to make coffee, tea and crackers, that, shamefully, should have been cookies.”

“Why?”

“I had two ladies stop by who’d had their houses broken into.”

“A new case?”

She nodded. “Though they said they want me to take it pro boner.”

Declan laughed as Charlotte pushed off the counter and headed into the living room to retrieve her phone. “There’s a twist with this case that might interest you. They say a man broke into their houses, destroyed one item in each, and then left.”

“That’s weird.”

“Yes. And, both things were purchased from your shop.”

“Really?”

She nodded and swiped her phone to life. “I have photos. A chair and what’s left of a lamp. Do these ring any bells for you?”

Declan took the phone and flipped through the photos.

“These belonged to Richard Riggins. The old guy who came screaming into the shop the other day when you were there.”

She grinned. “I thought so. The guy who came in, destroyed something, and left.”

Declan could tell she’d known all along the true connection between his shop and the items. He held up his laptop. “Let me guess—”

“Yes.” Charlotte looked even more giggly, if that were possible. “Now it all makes sense. He broke into your shop. He didn’t find his things, so he stole your laptop to check your sales records. Now he’s tracking them down.”

Declan nodded. “I thought the guy in the video sort of looked his size and shape, but I never imagined he was this desperate to get his stuff back.”

“He was pretty mad.”

“Sure, but breaking into my store? Hacking? This is next-level obsession.”

Charlotte crossed her arms against her chest. “But that’s the weirdest part. He isn’t taking them back. He’s destroying them. Why would he do that?”

“I don’t know. I can tell you, at the time, he seemed happy to get rid of it.
